Party recipe: Baked jalapeño popper pockets

Party recipe: Baked jalapeño popper pockets

I made these a while back for Super Bowl Sunday (along with the red velvet brownies), and was happy to see them disappear quickly.

For me, these are exactly what party food should be: satisfying, fatty, fun, bite-sized, and easy to make.

Ingredients:
1 tube Pillsbury crescent-roll dough
About 8 Tbsp cream cheese
1 large jalapeño

Step 1. Cut the cream cheese into 8 equal squares and the jalapeño into into 8 equal slices.
Step 2. Unroll the crescent-roll dough and place a square of cream cheese in the middle of each triangle, topping with a jalapeño slice.
Step 3. Tear each triangle of dough free at its perforated edge, and twist the corners up and together, forming small pockets and completely sealing off the cream cheese and jalapeño slices inside.
Step 4. Bake according to the crescent-roll directions.

DI(fr)Yday: How to make collage coasters

Inspired by fellow blogger Strawberry Koi's lovely floral coasters and these awesome ones on Etsy, I decided to make some collage coasters based on the films of Sofia Coppola.

I really love kitschy fan art, so I wanted to illustrate a scene from each of the four films and mix my illustrations with decorative scrapbook paper.

Here's how you can make some of your own using this method...

You will need:
- Tiles (available at Home Depot)
- Felt
- Mod Podge
- Foam brush
- Scissors
- Scrapbook paper
- Drawing paper, pens, markers, whatever supplies you like to draw with.

How to make collage coasters

Step 1. Cut a square of felt about 1/4" smaller than your tiles for each tile. Using the Mod Podge and foam brush, glue the felt to the underside of each tile. Let dry. This will keep them from scratching your table or each other when stacked.
Step 2. Brush the surface of each tile with Mod Podge. Apply your base layer, a square of scrapbook paper about 1/4" smaller than your tile. Use your fingers to press out any air bubbles and smooth any wrinkles. Let dry.
Step 3. Draw your scenes and cut them out as desired. For "Lost in Translation" and "Somewhere," I used scrapbook paper as background and illustrated all the foreground. For "The Virgin Suicides," I used scrapbook paper just to frame a smaller square of illustration. For "Marie Antoinette," (my favorite, but also the one that took the most work), I used scrapbook paper for the background and for her dress (with details drawn on) and illustrated her hands and bust.
Step 4. Brush another layer of Mod Podge on top of the paper and all the way to the edges of the tile. Layer your illustration on top, pressing out any air bubbles and smoothing any wrinkles with your fingers as before. Let dry. Apply at least three more layers of Mod Podge on top, allowing to dry between coats. Don't worry, it doesn't take as long as it sounds like it does. ;-)

What I wore today: 02/23/2012 (Cherry Mint)

Minty outfit: mint green cardigan worn backward from Jay Crew, Gap cropped black cigarette pants, studded quilted flats, bangles, chunky ring

I love mint green with a pop of cherry red. Paired with black, I've got a bit of an Andes Mint color palette going on here, and I can't say that's a bad thing.

While mint green is hands-down my favorite color, I don't own a lot of mint green clothing, mostly because it's not a very common shade for clothing to be produced in. However, with this spring's pastel trend, it's popping up more and more, and I plan to take full advantage.

As for the fact that I'm wearing this cardigan backward: it's something I've been doing for a while since my grandmother told me it was "all the rage" when she was in high school (back in the early 1940s). I thought it was such a cute idea, and I really like how the buttons up the back come off as a subtle, unexpected detail. Lately, I've seen some other bloggers doing it (including Sian in her guest post here). Isn't it amazing how a trend can pop up, disappear, and pop up again? What makes that happen?

Even though the initial inspiration was from the 1940s, I think the overall feel of this outfit--with its figure hugging sweater and cropped cigarette pants--is quite 1960s.
